Hello, my name is Matt Kuehl. I live in Oak Park, Illinois, near Chicago. On the right, that's a selfie of me and my son, Oliver.
I’ve been passionate about photography since I got my first professional SLR camera more than 20 years ago. I’ve shot for newspapers, freelanced for private organizations and assisted professional photographers. In 2005 I shot my first solo wedding, and in 2008 I opened Kuehl Studios, Inc. In my first year, I shot over 20 weddings, in addition to several other events and portrait sittings. I have since shot over 100 weddings and numerous other events, as well as dozens of real estate sites.
My style is a contemporary blend of candid photojournalism and traditional portraiture. I try my best to achieve a natural look in my pictures by capturing the real moments and subtle details that make your special day unique and memorable. I look for people’s genuine character, without contriving poses or forcing pretentious expressions, and I think it shows in my work. I do traditional posed portraits at every event I shoot, which balances with the freestyle editorial work. I especially love shooting weddings because they are such a great venue for candid documentary work. I can be fly on the wall, without people noticing me while I capture all the details and emotions as I tell a story through pictures.
I work independant of larger chains, which benefits my clients both financially and artistically. Lastly, I shoot all digital and have a streamlined post-processing workflow that I have developed and honed with the help of my background experience in engineering. This all helps me provide the highest quality work at very competitive prices.
